ABOUT THE RESIDENCY
THICK SALT is a dance project that examines themes of identity, connection, and emotional transformation. Structured into five sections, the work delves into the pursuit of meaning, the complexities of relationships, and the process of accepting the unknown.
This project combines choreography, improvisation, and moments of stillness to create a layered physical and emotional narrative. Collaborating with dancers, a spoken word artist, and a musician, I will experiment with blending movement, live narration, and sound, creating an immersive, multi-sensory experience.
The residency provides the crucial time and space to refine the work’s movement vocabulary and explore its narrative potential. I will focus on building solos, duets, and meditative group moments while weaving in spoken word and live music to amplify the work’s emotional depth.
This development period is vital to crafting a performance that resonates deeply, inviting audiences to reflect on their own journeys and connections while celebrating the shared power of storytelling through movement.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Starla Edwards is a dancer and choreographer from Birmingham, Alabama who is drawn to the feeling of connection through expression. She holds a BFA in Dance and a minor in Arts Management from George Mason University, where she collaborated with artists and performed works by visionaries like Andonis Foniadakis, Lucinda Childs, Hope Boykin, and Camille A. Brown.
As a dancer and storyteller with Camille A. Brown & Dancers, Edwards was involved in numerous creation processes, culminating in the premiere of I AM at Jacob’s Pillow. Her choreography has been featured in Dual Rivet’s Made by Women Festival and in senior solos at The Juilliard School in 2023 and 2024.
Edwards’ work prioritizes self-expression, ease, and authenticity, making her a compelling voice in the dance community. She currently serves as the rehearsal assistant for McKoy Dance Project, honing her leadership and collaborative skills. Dedicated to creating spaces for reflection and connection, Edwards continues to evolve as an artist, crafting narratives that deeply resonate with her.
