Ian Mozdzen is an independent dance maker, devised theatre/performance artist and art model from rural Canada who has been activating stages across Canada and internationally for over two decades. Educated in devised theatre, contemporary dance, classical/ritual forms, Butoh and more, Mozdzen has, since 2021, developed a distinctive practice centered on instant “nonchoreographic” dance. Recent presentations include Mexico City’s FIDCDMX, Spain’s IBERICA residency and Mile Zero Dance’s 40th anniversary season (Edmonton), with performances reaching audiences across Canada and into the USA, Mexico, India, Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria, Sri Lanka and Ghana. Mozdzen has also provided leadership and support in the arts, having directed performance organizations and worked alongside boards, artistic directors and educators. Since 2021, Mozdzen has launched over 100 independent initiatives, including a monthly new dance series, a SCHOOL OF NATURAL DANCERS practice platform, and a series of draw + dance gallery happenings. At Baryshnikov Arts, Mozdzen is excited to create a choreographed dance for the first time by reflecting upon years of instant dance practice.
