BIOGRAPHIES

Mark Morris was born on August 29, 1956, in Seattle, Washington, where he studied with Verla Flowers and Perry Brunson. In the early years of his career, he performed with various companies, including Lar Lubovitch and Eliot Feld, before founding the Mark Morris Dance Group (MMDG) in 1980. Over his career, he has created more than 150 works for the company. From 1988 to 1991, he was Director of Dance at Brussels’ Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie and co-founded the White Oak Dance Project with Mikhail Baryshnikov in 1990. Much in demand as a ballet choreographer, Morris has created 22 ballets since 1986, and his work has been performed by companies worldwide. Noted for his musicality, Morris has been described as “undeviating in his devotion to music” (The New Yorker). He began conducting performances for MMDG in 2006 and has since conducted at Tanglewood Music Center, Lincoln Center, and BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music). He also works extensively in opera, directing and choreographing productions at the Metropolitan Opera; New York City Opera; English National Opera; among others. Morris’ accolades include a MacArthur Fellowship, eleven honorary doctorates, and induction into the National Museum of Dance’s Hall of Fame in 2015. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has received several major awards, including the Samuel H. Scripps/American Dance Festival Award for Lifetime Achievement and the Leonard Bernstein Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2001, he opened the Mark Morris Dance Center in Brooklyn, providing a home for his company and offering educational dance programs for the community. His memoir, Out Loud, was published by Penguin Press in 2021.

Jiří Kylián (Czech Republic, 1947) started his dance career at the age of nine, at the School of the National Ballet in Prague. He left Prague when he received a scholarship for the Royal Ballet School in London in 1967.  After this, he left to join the Stuttgart Ballett led by John Cranko and in 1975 Kylián became artistic director of the Nederlands Dans Theater in The Hague (NL). In 1978 he put NDT on the international map with Sinfonietta. That same year, he founded Nederlands Dans Theater 2, which was meant to function as a breeding ground for young talent. He also initiated Nederlands Dans Theater 3 in 1991, the company for older dancers from forty till ‘death’. This three dimensional structure was unique in the world of dance. After an extraordinary record of service, with an oeuvre of almost 100 ballets, Kylián handed over the artistic leadership in 1999, and remained associated with the dance company as house choreographer until December 2009. In the last ten years, Kylián has directed five dance films, Car-Men (2006), Between Entrance & Exit (2013), Schwarzfahrer (2014), the award winning Scalamare (2017) and Return to a strange land (2026). Kylián has created numerous art installations such as Free Fall (2016), Moving Still (2025) and Ensō (2025).

Doug Varone is the Artistic Director of Doug Varone and Dancers. Since 1986, the Company has toured major venues both nationally and internationally. On tour, the company has performed in more than 125 cities in 45 states across the U.S. and in Europe, Asia, Canada, and South America. Stages include The Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, The Joyce Theater, London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall, Moscow’s Stanislavsky Theater, Buenos Aires’ Teatro San Martin, the Venice Biennale, Marble Hall in Tokyo, and the Bates, Jacob’s Pillow and American Dance Festivals.

In opera, he is in demand as both director and choreographer and his numerous theater credits include Broadway, Off-Broadway and regional theaters across the country. Honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Obie Award, two individual Bessie Awards, a Doris Duke Artist Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Dance Guild. Varone received his BFA from Purchase College where he was awarded the President’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2007. Varone’s creative output is as varied as his interests. Recent projects include: everything is fine, a full evening movement play based on the poems of Billy Collins; The Scrapbook, a digital journal of 10 films, Somewhere, his acclaimed non-narrative version of Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story, and To My Arms/Restore set to the music of G.F Handel remixed with club beats. The Company will be celebrating its 40th Anniversary at The Joyce Theater in May 2026 with the premiere of No Matter What the End, set to Radiohead’s iconic album of In Rainbows. Dovadance.org

Louis Johnson began his ballet training at Jones-Haywood Dance School in Washington, DC. In 1950, he was accepted to the School of American Ballet and moved to New York along with fellow student Chita Rivera.

He went on to become an acclaimed choreographer, dancer, and director in ballet, modern dance, Broadway, and film. Johnson performed in Broadway shows including House of Flowers and Hallelujah Baby! and in the screen and stage versions of Bob Fosse’s Damn Yankees. He created works for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Dance Theatre of Harlem. In 1970 he was nominated for a Tony Award for his choreography for the musical Purlie and he choreographed the 1978 film adaptation of The Wiz. Johnson was dance director for the Negro Ensemble Company, co-director with Mike Malone of the DC Black Rep Theatre Dance Company, taught at Yale University, and is credited with starting the formal dance department at Howard University in Washington, DC. He developed the Henry Street Settlement Dance Department in New York City, which he led for twenty years. Known as “choreographer to the stars,” Louis Johnson choreographed for the Ed Sullivan Show, Radio City Music Hall, Peter Allen, Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, the O’Jays, and Gerald and Eddie Lavert’s “Father and Son Tour.”

Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker (b. 1960) created Asch, her first choreographic work, in 1980 after studying dance at Mudra School in Brussels and Tisch School of the Arts in New York. Two years later came the premiere of Fase, Four Movements to the Music of Steve Reich. De Keersmaeker established the dance company Rosas in Brussels in 1983, while creating the work Rosas danst Rosas. Since these breakthrough pieces, her choreography has been grounded in a rigorous and prolific exploration of the relationship between dance and music. She has created with Rosas a wide-ranging body of work engaging the musical structures and scores of several periods, from early music to contemporary and popular idioms. Her choreographic practice also draws formal principles from geometry, numerical patterns, the natural world, and social structures to offer a unique perspective on the body’s articulation in space and time. In 1995 De Keersmaeker established the school P.A.R.T.S. (Performing Arts Research and Training Studios) in Brussels. Over the past 10 years, her work has also engaged with the visual arts in museum contexts such as the Louvre, Tate Modern and MoMA. In 2023 she created EXIT ABOVE with a cast of 13 dancers and in 2024 IL CIMENTO, exploring Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. Her latest creation BREL (2025) is a collaboration with dancer and choreographer Solal Mariotte.
