OUR Story
Since 2005, Baryshnikov Arts Center has championed creative freedom, cultivating a community of adventurous artists and audiences through our groundbreaking residency program and innovative performances. We have supported over 270 Residency Artists and produced over 270 different shows of dance, music, theater, multimedia, and performance art.
The building
Before its transformation into the Baryshnikov Arts Center (BAC), the site of our building was a parking garage. The purchase of the site was led by former Baryshnikov Arts Center Executive Director Christina Sterner and the building was built by the Baryshnikov Dance Foundation in concert with a theatrical producing group including Alan Schuster (STOMP), Kevin McCollum and Jeffrey Seller (Rent, West Side Story, and Hamilton). The building was designed by John W. Averitt of Averitt Architects and opened as 37 Arts in 2005.
Performances
Since its founding in 2005, Baryshnikov Arts Center has presented over 270 bold, engaging performances spanning dance, music, theater, multimedia, and performance art.
RESIDENCIES
Baryshnikov Arts Center has been the home of over 270 Residencies, and we have provided space for creative investigation in a wide range of performing arts disciplines. Each year, Baryshnikov Arts Center hosts up to 20 artists in residence who receive access to Baryshnikov Arts Center’s studios and theaters in addition to optional work-in-progress showings, artist honoraria, technical and administrative assistance, and marketing assets. Residencies require no future obligation on the artist’s part.
