Baryshnikov Arts is a rare organization that unwaveringly champions artists’ experimentation, innovation, and expression for seeing the world as though it could be otherwise.
In 2024, I received a two-week residency in their beautiful John Cage and Merce Cunningham Studio to complete my project FIGARO/FAGGOTS. When others would have backed away from this material, BA recognized its urgency, leaned in, and commissioned the world premiere as part of his 20th Anniversary Season in the Jerome Robbins Theater.
I’m beyond grateful to be included in this rich and thriving ecosystem made of an extraordinary staff, gorgeous workspace, and audience as adventurous as our imaginations.

Baryshnikov Arts has been one of the heartbeats of my performance career, and most recently, a launching pad for my choreographic research. It’s in this haven that I’ve taken part in various processes requiring a generosity and openness that are reflected in BA’s staff, studios, and founder’s incomparable career and vision. As a recent residency artist, being granted access to state-of-the-art resources made preparation and artmaking less cumbersome. My residency at BA provided sanctuary at a time where artists and humanity feel endangered, giving my collaborators and me license to create fearlessly and lean into the power of our collective voice. This organization is an invaluable resource to the New York arts landscape as BA continues to emphasize interdisciplinary collaboration, bringing folks of all backgrounds and specialties together to create life-changing moments.

Baryshnikov Arts is an electrical conductor of inspirational energy. I wrote my favorite songs for my musical SPANGLISH SH!T in the Cage and Cunningham studio, dreamily gazing out of its floor-to-ceiling windows. From the minute I was personally welcomed in by Mr. Baryshnikov on my first day, I knew I had evolved to another level of artistry. Seeing the boundary-breaking work of my fellow residents only further affirmed this. My BA residencies emboldened me to embrace the power of my pen and voice. I am forever grateful for their support of my artistic journey.
